Mulvane football coach Dave Fennewald wasn’t at practice on Sunday or Monday. He didn’t even teach because he was spending time with his family as his dad prepared for colon cancer surgery on Monday.
Fennewald spent Monday night at the hospital with his father, Leonard, and met the team at Collegiate on Tuesday afternoon before their Class 4A first-round playoff game.
After Mulvane came back from an 18-point deficit with nine minutes remaining to win 47-45, Fennewald credited his assistant coaches with taking over.
“I know my dad would have wanted me to go to practice, but my assistants told me to be with my family,” Fennwald said. He said his dad plans to attend Saturday’s home game against Holton (10-0).
