The Mulvane Men's basketball team kicked off the Sub-State tournament by hosting the Wellington Crusaders on Monday. This was the third time the Wildcats and Crusaders faced each other this season and the Cats defeated the Crusaders 73-59. Mulvane lost the first match up against Wellington 68-76 and won the second game 74-71.
Wellington took the first quarter 19-16 but the Wildcats bounced back and won the 2nd quarter 15-9. This gave the Wildcats a 31-28 lead going into halftime. In a crucial 3rd quarter, the Cats came out hot and outscored the Crusaders 20-10 to give Mulvane a 51-38 lead going into the 4th quarter. The final quarter was tight but Mulvane won the quarter 22-21 for a final score of 73-59.
Senior Drew Ellis and Junior Gage Gerlach lead the Wildcats in scoring with both grabbing 18 points. Drew also had 4 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals. Gage had 2 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Sophomore Trey Abasolo scored 15 points and had 6 rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 steals. Mike Manis dominated the first quarter (8 pts) and the boards and finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal. Senior Jeb Herrman dropped in 8 points and had 2 rebounds. Freshman Ian Comer scored 3 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 steals.
Mulvane will face the number 1 seed of the sub-state tournament Wichita Trinity (18-1) tonight at Trinity. The game kicks off at 7:00 PM.
