The MMS Boys Basketball team hosted Wellington for the last home games of the regular season, split on the evening.

MHS - Men's Basketball / February 21, 2020 By Kasey McDowell

The Mulvane Middle School boys basketball team played their last regular-season home games last Thursday, February 20th and they split with the Wellington Crusaders as the 8th grade swept both games and 7th grade fell in both games. The 8th grade A-team is sitting at 8-2 on the season (7-0 in league play) and the B-team is sitting at 5-5 on the season (4-3 in league play). The 7th grade A-team is sitting at 2-8 on the season (2-5 in league play) and the B-team is sitting at 4-6 on the season (3-4 in league play).

In the 8th grade A-game, "we jump passing lanes all night, our guys would steal the ball and push the tempo," said coach Hargrove. Shannon Fuller had a good night getting to the rim and finishing, he finished with 12 points. "We had noticed the first time we played them that two of their inbound plays would start off with a high lob pass so we would have Shannon use his speed to go jump the pass and have a layup on our offensive end and it worked every time," said Coach Hargrove. Garrett Olson did a great job battling in the paint with 12 points. "Tonight was a good night all 13 players got to play in the A-game," said coach Hargrove.

"Both A and B our defensive pressure was key. We made Wellington make mistakes all night in both games. Tucker Hargrove had a huge game for us in the B game putting up 16 points. Tuck's shot was on tonight so coach Just gave him the green light anytime he touched the ball. Colton Flemming had a good game scoring 8 points. Due to sickness we only had 7 players for our B game." said Coach Hargrove.

In the 7A game, the Wildcats had trouble getting past the Crusader's size, as Wellington had several tall boys on the court. The full-court press by the Crusaders proved frustrating for the Cats. The Cats were competitive in the first half only down 11-12, but the second half the Crusaders took over and outscored the Cats 30-6. Fisher Dye led the Cats with 8 points while Cooper Slayton finished with 5, and Dylan Mow with 4.

The 7B game was much of the same as the Wildcats has trouble breaking through the larger Crusaders defense. The points were fairly evenly spread as Gaelin M. Schmidt and Alex Dillon led the Cats with 4 points each, Cameron Hagerman finished with 3 points, and Joe Bull, Trey Florio, Kaden Palmer, and Caven Martin all finished with 2 points each.

The Wildcats hosted the Haysville West Gorillas on Tuesday, February 18th in a league matchup. The Cats went 3-1 on the evening as the 8A team won a close game 34-31, 8B won 27-17, 7A lost 20-29, and the 7B team won 24-11.

In the 8th A-game, "we knew this Haysville West group has speed and a couple of guys that can get to the rim. This was a game we had to have our defense ready to go and not let anything come easy to Haysville West. We denied passing lanes, we closed out and we kept the ball out of the paint as much as possible. Haysville West has a couple of guys that can score inside and out and those two combined for 25 of their 31 points tonight but we kept battling and got it done. Shannon Fuller, Aiden McKee, and Lucas Sorensen did a great job of jumping the ball and pushing the tempo on our defensive end." said Coach Hargrove.

"On offense, we couldn't get the easy jumpers to fall and we didn't make a single 3 pointer all night. It was an off night for our outside game so we had to rely on our paint game. Garrett Olson owned the boards and the paint with 9 points and Kaiden Abasolo had great takes to the rim and ended with 17 points. Tonight against a team that is fast at getting back on D you always want to have the jump shot game flowing and tonight it wasn't happening, we had to adjust and find out what was working for us and that's what the boys did." said Coach Hargrove.

"Our B-game we wanted to put a ton of pressure on their guards up top to make them make mistakes or pick up the ball. From the last time we played them we knew a few of their guards would pick their dribble up as soon as we made them dribble with their off-hand. Clinesmith, Booe, Lampe, Perkins, and Hargrove did a great job of harassing their guards which usually resulted in them throwing the ball away. Josh Lien had another good night owning his space in the paint on offense and defense. Tucker Hargrove had a couple of three-pointers that got our momentum up. The guys were playing fast and pushing the tempo all night. Before the game, I challenged the boys to win the 50/50 balls throughout the game and the boys won that battle all night long. The guys were having fun and playing hard." said Hargrove.

The 7A boys started slowly in the 1st quarter and were outscored 2-8. They kept the score close the rest of the game but could not make up the points in the end and fell 20-29. Fisher Dye led the Cats with 8 points followed by Brady Nelson and Dylan Mow, both with 4 points. Cooper Slayton and Aiden Heckathorn both finished with 2 points each.

The 7B boys started strong and didn't let up on the Gorillas as they took the first quarter 10-3 and second quarter 7-4. They blanked their opponents in the 3rd quarter and won 24-11. Gaelin M. Schmidt led the Cats with 8 points, Joe Bull with 6 points, Trey Florio with 4, Cameron Hagerman with 3 points, Caven Martin with 2 points, and Alex Dillon with 1 point.
