On Friday, Nov. 7, the Mulvane Wildcats defeated the McPherson Bullpups 28-25, advancing to the sectional round of the playoffs.
The Wildcats went into the game as 42 point underdogs. They were completely underestimated by McPherson. The Wildcats were so underestimated, in fact, that the Bullpups didn’t even suit their injured quarterback, senior Kyler Kinnamon. The Bullpups were rumored to be resting Kinnamon for the next game. Fortunately for the Wildcats, Kinnamon did not play.
The Wildcats went up early 21-3 toward the end of the first half. However, McPherson scored with a minute to play, and looked like the momentum had swung in McPhersons favor. The Bullpups went in to the half down 21-11.
After the half, the Bullpups continued the success with two more touchdowns, putting McPherson up 25-21 in the fourth quarter.
With less than two minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Wildcats went on a drive for the ages. A nine play, 70+ yard capped by a five yard touchdown pass to senior Jace Price.
Jace Price caught the touchdown in the endzone with 30 seconds to go. After senior Austin Brown’s PAT, the Wildcats went up 28-25.
Jace Price played phenomenal. Price recorded 8 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Not only a force on the defensive side, but the offensive side as well. Price recorded 73 receiving yards and one touchdown. That touchdown, however, was the most important touchdown of the season.
The final score of the game was 28-25. Mulvane will play Topeka Hayden tonight in Mulvane. The Wildcats are 40+ point underdogs. However, the Cats were 42 point underdogs to McPherson.
Although the Wildcats’ season began with a rocky start, it’s the playoffs. And anything can happen during the playoffs.
