Mulvane Grabs Win Over the Always Tough Buhler Crusaders

MHS - Football / September 23, 2018 By Kasey McDowell

It was all Green and White last Friday when the Wildcats took the long trip up to Buhler for a non-league match up against the Crusaders. Mulvane last played at Buhler in the 2016 season in the State Playoffs and the Crusaders came out on top 14-24. It was a different story this time around as the Wildcats outmatched the Crusaders 39-29.

The Wildcats started off marching down the field but an interception stopped the drive down on the Buhler's 40 yard line. The Wildcat defense forced a turnover on downs on the Crusader's first drive and then Mulvane was on to the races. Senior Drew Ellis scored the first touchdown in record fashion by catching a quick out and after making a defender miss, he raced up the sideline for a 91 yard TD. This set a new school record for longest TD pass/reception. The old record was 88 yards and was held by Ty Redington/Alex Evans (2012) and Lonny Travis/Greg Quigley (1984).

Drew was not done by a long shot. He ended the game with 5 receptions for 183 yards, 3 TD receptions, 2 interceptions on defense, and a kickoff return for a TD (which was called back for a penalty unfortunately).

Senior Cole Diffenbaugh ran the ball hard with 22 carries for 65 yards and a rushing TD. He also had 2 receptions for 102 yards, including a 72 yard TD reception just as the 2nd quarter closed out.

Senior Jacob Walker finished with 5 receptions for 62 yards and 1 TD reception.

Sophomore Tab Creekmore finished the game 346 yards passing with 5 passing touchdowns which matches the current record on the boards held by Jordan Gosch (2008), Gus Strunk (2009 & 10), and Ty Redington (2011), all who tossed 5 TDs in a game.

The Wildcats Defense played a fantastic game and did not allow a rushing TD. The Crusaders points came from talented quarterback Colton Goans and receiver Briggam McCurdy who connected for 4 TDs. Lane Shockey caused some havoc for Goans as he recorded 2.5 sacks. Blake Scott recorded 2 sacks and Brandon Dandurand recorded 0.5 sacks. Jeret Plummer and Nathan Klein both lead the team in tackles and recorded 10 (5 Solo and 5 assist).

"We came out and played extremely well in all aspects of the football game. Football is all about blocking and tackling. We pass blocked extremely well and were the better tackling team Friday night.

Drew showed exactly why he was an All State caliber player last year with his performance Friday night. Big time players make big plays in big games. Even though that was only game 4 of the season it was an extremely big game for us." said Coach Myears.

Mulvane will be celebrating Homecoming all week and will face Coffeyville this Friday at 7:00 PM. Come out and support your Wildcats!

Side Notes:
* Mulvane recorded its 500th win as a football program dating back to 1914. This number is based on the best available data that was compiled from old records and newspapers.  Mulvane current program record is 500 - 391.
* Mulvane has never played Coffeyville in the programs 104 year history.
