It was all smiles the last couple of Friday nights as the Mulvane Football team took care of business on the field against a new opponent Field Kindley from Coffeyville and long time rival Rose Hill.
Mulvane faced off against Coffeyville on Sept 28th for Homecoming. The Cats have never played Field Kindley before and mixed in with the Homecoming, it was an energetic environment all evening at Lyle Couch Stadium. The pass heavy Tornadoes capitalized on a turnover and scored quickly in the 1st quarter, but the Wildcats answered with a 24 yd pass from Tab Creekmore to Drew Ellis. Coffeyville tacked on another score on a long pass at 8:42 in the 2nd quarter but the Wildcats finished strong before halftime with a 19 yd pass from Creekmore to Jacob Walker at the 6:26 mark and a 6 yd run by Cole Diffenbaugh at the 4:24 mark. The Wildcats went into halftime with a 21-14 lead.
During the half-time homecoming festivities, the homecoming court took to the field and the 2018 Homecoming Queen was Abbie McGown, daughter of Ty and Jamie McGown. The Homecoming King was Ryan Roderick, son of Chris and Mandy Roderick. The rest of the court were Gracie Hornecker, daughter of Jack and Jamie Hornecker, Alona Swayne, daughter of Arlene Reekie, and Hanna Nash, daughter of Bill Nash and Katie Duncan. Drew Ellis, son of Jeff and Shannon Ellis, Peyton Wayman, son of Gordon and Samantha Wayman, and Jeret Plummer, son of Tim and Angie Plummer.
The Wildcats scored quickly in the 3rd quarter with a 47 yd run by Cole Diffenbaugh. It was a defensive battle the rest of the game until the Tornadoes scored on a 4 yard run at the 6:59 mark in the 4th quarter. The Cats held on for a 28-20 Homecoming victory.
Junior Cole Diffenbaugh led the rushing attack with 164 yards on 33 attempts and 2 touchdowns. Sophomore Tab Creekmore was 8 for 22 for 106 passing and 2 touchdowns. Senior Drew Ellis had 5 receptions for 62 yards and 1 touchdown. Senior Jacob Walker also had a 19 yard receiving touchdown.
The Wildcat defense had a tough challenge defending the very fast and pass heavy offense of the Tornadoes, but they forced 4 turnovers with 1 interception and 3 fumble recoveries. Jaxen Young and Tyler Lanzrath led the Wildcats in tackles with 9 and 7 respectively. Caleb Mader had the 1 interception for the defense and added 6 tackles.

The Mulvane Football team took the field against longtime rival Rose Hill last Friday and celebrated Senior Night for all the fall student athletes. The rather large class of football seniors are Drew Ellis, Caden Webb, Jalen Fluis, Braden Webb, Nathan Klein, Blake Scott, Gage Milan, Lane Shockey, Kyle Smith, Jeret Plummer, Mitchell Cooper, Peyton Wayman, Brandon Dandurand, Jacob Walker, Cole Schmidt, and Jeb Herman.
It was all green and white all game as the Wildcats trounced the Rockets 48-18 at Lyle Couch stadium. The Cats struck first with a 2 yard run by Diffenbaugh at the 8:50 mark in the 1st quarter. He also tip-toed down the sideline, barely staying in bounds for a 37 yard TD run at the 3:27 mark in the 1st quarter. Creekmore added to the lead with a 3 yard TD run in the 2nd quarter at the 10:19 mark to give the Wildcats a 21-0 lead going in to halftime.
It was a special moment at the 50 yard line as Superintendent Dr. Jay Ensley and Athletic Director Doug Evers invited former coach and current MHS assistant principal Dave Fennewald out on the field. Fennewald was thanked for his 26 years of coaching and the positive impact he has had on the many kids he has coached since 1992 at Mulvane High School. He was presented with a framed picture of Lyle Couch field surrounded by a team picture of every team he's coached since 1992. Victory Vittles also purchased a brick to be installed at Lyle Couch stadium.
Cole Diffenbaugh added to the Wildcats lead with a 68 yd run at the 1:44 mark in the 3rd quarter. Creekmore and Diffenbaugh hooked up for a nice 69 yard TD pass at the 10:48 mark in the 4th quarter to bring the score to 35-0. The Rockets added three 4th quarter TDs but the Wildcats also added 2 more scores in the 4th. Diffenbaugh broke open and scored on a 55 yard run at the 10:12 mark and Gage Gerlach scored with a 3 yard run at the 4:03 mark. The final score was 48-18.
The Wildcats offense racked up 552 yards of total offense (409 rushing - 143 passing) and the Wildcat Defense had a very impressive game and held the Rockets to 0 yards rushing and 165 yards passing. Diffenbaugh had a great game with 268 yards rushing on 21 attempts and 4 TDs. Gage Gerlach and Tab Creekmore also added a rushing TD each. Tab finished with 117 yards passing with 7 completions and 1 passing TD. Drew Ellis finished with 55 yards receiving on 4 receptions and a 2-point conversion reception. Diffenbaugh finished with 1 TD reception for 69 yards.
Jaxen Young lead the Wildcats in tackles with 11 and 1.5 tackles for loss. The Cats racked up 8 sacks, 13 tackles for loss, and 2 interceptions. The following players recorded a sack: Young (1.0), Greer (2.0), Scott (1.5), Shockey (0.5), Dandurand (1.0), Nelson (0.5), and Plummer (1.5). The following players recorded a tackle for loss: Young (1.5), Greer (3.0), Scott (2.0), Shockey (1.0), Klein (0.5), Dandurand (1.5), Nelson (0.5), Plummer (2.0), Seier (0.5), and Milledge (0.5).
The Cats will travel to El Dorado this Friday and will finish the regular season next Friday by traveling to face a tough Wellington team. The first round of state playoffs will take the place the Friday after the Wellington game.
