Friday, December 20, 2019, The Mulvane Wildcats varsity boys basketball team defeated the Wellington Crusaders, 58-51, heading into Christmas break, finishing at .500, 3-3 on the young season.

Lead by Jr. Trey Abasolo, who had 21 points, 15 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. His second double double of the season so far. Abasolo  is currently one of the state’s top scorers, all classes 6A-1A, at 23.7 points per game.

“Rebounding and defense is a huge part of our early success this season and including Friday against Wellington, we have to find a way to continue to get better defensively and not be satisfied” said Head Coach Mike Abasolo.

Sr. Michael Manis had a great game with 16 points, shooting 100% from the field, and 6 rebounds. So. Mason Ellis finished with 8 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist. Sr. Gage Gerlach contributed 6 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal. So. Ian Comer had 5 points and a game high 5 assists.

“We don’t win that game without the defensive effort of Sr. Luke Coffey” said Coach Abasolo.

Statistically, Sr. Luke Coffey only had 1 rebound and 2 steals, but he frustrated the Crusaders top scorers all night to allow the Wildcats to keep an edge offensively and allow their scorers to get them their third victory of the season.
