Freshman Kammie Schanz brings home 2nd place from the Inaugural Girls Wrestling State Championship

MHS - Wrestling / March 3, 2020 By Kasey McDowell

On a historical day, KSHSAA held the Inaugural Girls Wrestling State Championships at Salina’s Tony’s Pizza Event Center last Thursday, February 27th, 2020. Mulvane freshman Kammie Schanz qualified for state by taking 2nd place in regionals in her weight class of 143 the weekend before. She was the only wrestler from Mulvane to qualify for state.

Kammie received a bye in the first round and her first match was against Cadence Christenson from Basehor-Linwood. Kammie won that match by major decision with a score of 13-5. Her semifinal match was against Abbie Jones from Altamont-Labette County and Kammie won that match by decision with a score of 6-2.

The championship match was against Livia Swift from Pratt. Kammie was ahead most of the match but Livia scored a takedown with less than 20 seconds left and won 3-2. Kammie brought home the 2nd place state medal.

"It was pretty neat being a part of history. I wasn't sure what to expect the first year of girls since I've mostly wrestled boys in years past, but the competition was really great," said Kammie.

"Kammie is an absolute warrior on the mat, but what made the whole experience truly fun is that she's also just a great kid. She's driven to do good things and do them the right way. As a wrestler, she dissects the match videos, tries new things in practice, is dissatisfied with anything less than the best. She's earned every last win and every bit of praise she could receive." said Coach Eric Kruger.

Kammie ended her freshman season with a 31-3 record against girls, 31-1st period takedowns, and 28 pins.
