The 8th grade basketball team finishes the season undefeated in league play and wins the league tournament!

MHS - Men's Basketball / March 4, 2020 By Kasey McDowell

The Mulvane Middle School boys basketball hosted the season-ending league tournament this year and the 8th-grade boys, being the top seed, received a bye in the first round last Saturday, February 29th, 2020. Haysville West defeated Clearwater so the Mulvane boys face them in the 11:30 game.

The Cats and Gorillas were even in the first quarter tied 13-13, but the Cats turned up the defense in the 2nd quarter, outscoring them 11-2 for a 24-15 halftime lead. The Wildcats were hot the 3rd quarter and dropped in 18 points to the Gorilla's 6 and the Cats coasted to the 44-29 win.

The championship game was on Monday, March 2nd against Rose Hill, who had defeated Wellington and Prairie Hills to get to the championship game. The Rockets were no match for the Wildcats as Mulvane held them to only 8 points in the first half and won the game 44-25.

"We got it done!" said Coach Hargrove.

"Going into tonight's game we knew that Rose Hill is a patient team that slows their offense down and works the ball until they get a good open look. We knew they were going to try to slow us down so we ran a press at them to make them speed up and make bad decisions. We missed plenty of shots tonight but the guys kept fighting. We got a spark of energy when Canon Lampe and Tucker Hargrove came off the bench and both hit 3 pointers for us. Canon, unfortunately, got rolled up going for a loose ball and hurt his knee and couldn't continue. All 16 players played in the championship." said Coach Hargrove.

The Wildcats traveled to Rose Hill last Thursday for the final game of the regular season and the final league game of the season. The undefeated in league Wildcats took care of business as they defeated the Rockets 32-24 and finished the season as undefeated league champions for the 2nd year in a row.

"We did it!!!!!!" said Coach Hargrove.

"We wrapped up the league last game and the #1 seed for the league tourney Saturday but our guys weren't satisfied unless we went undefeated which meant we had to win tonight. We had to play through some adversity tonight, we had 1 guy foul out and 2 others in foul trouble the entire second half. These guys had some challenges thrown their way tonight and we made the adjustments and got it done. Luke Sorensen had a heck of a game on the defensive end tonight." said Coach Hargrove.
