The Mulvane women's soccer team kicked off their 2022-23 season this past week and came out hot against Ark City on Tuesday and won a thriller against Augusta on Thursday. The girls faced the Bulldogs in the season opener and sophomore Jade Smallwood opened the Wildcats scoring with a penalty kick in the first half and the Cats went into halftime up 1-0.

The girls had the wind in the second half and opened up the scoring as Smallwood found the net 2 more times and senior Emma Hoffman dropped in 2 scores. Freshman defender Grace Carpenter found the net from about 30 yards out for the first varsity goal of her career and junior defender Teagan Garrison also found the net at the very end of the game for the Wildcat's 7-0 win.

The Mulvane defense did not allow any shots on goal so goalkeeper Rylie Schiffelbein did not have a busy night. Jade Smallwood, Mackenzie Christian, and Natalia Jester all had 1 assist each in the game.

The girl's next test was on Thursday as the Augusta Orioles came to town. The Wildcats had two quick fouls in the game, allowing the Orioles with two penalty kicks right in a row. Goalkeeper Rylie Schiffelbein blocked one of the two shots and the Orioles took the 1-0 lead into halftime.

The second half was a standoff for most of the half until Teagan Garrison tied the game up with just a few minutes left, forcing the game into overtime. Neither team scored in the first overtime, but sophomore Kierra Cain scored her first goal of the season in the second overtime, securing the 2-1 win for the Cats. Emma Hoffman finished with 1 assist and Rylie Schiffelbein guarded the Wildcat's net and finished the game with 3 saves with 4 shots on goal. The Wildcat defense had another great game allowing only 4 shots on goal with 2 of those being penalty kicks.
