The Mulvane football team grabbed their 6th straight win of the season with

The Mulvane varsity football team closed out their 2021 regular season on Senior Night with a win over the Wellington Crusaders and their 6th win in a row on the season. It was a tale of two halves as the Wildcats found themselves down 7-20 at one point in the first half but managed to tie the score 20-20 just before halftime. The Crusaders started off hot with some trickeration with a flea-flicker for a 60-yard TD on the second play of the game. They added on another long TD pass at the beginning of the 2nd quarter but the Cats got on the board with an 18-yard pass from Mason Ellis to Hunter Seier (PAT by Chase Dieker good). Wellington would add another score in their next possession to go up 20-7 but the Wildcats would bounce back with another TD pass from Ellis to Seier for 20-yards. The Cats would tie up the game with a 38-yard TD run by Ellis with 58 seconds left to go into halftime tied 20-20.

The second half was all Wildcats, minus one long TD pass by the Crusaders in the third. The Cats struck again at the 8:29 mark in the third quarter with an 8-yard TD run by Ellis and again, following a defensive interception by Seier, at the 6:32 mark with a 20-yard TD run by Ellis. The Mulvane defense clamped down in the 4th quarter, led by sophomore Kaiden Abasolo who had 3 sacks in the quarter, one was in the endzone for a safety at the 5:24 mark. The Cats would score one more time with a 3-yard TD run by Ellis at the 3:08 mark and the Cats defense would hold for the 40-26 win.

The Wildcats offense racked up 445 total yards with 142 passing and 303 rushing. On the ground, Ellis led the charge with 230 yards on 24 attempts and 4 touchdowns. Julien Myers finished with 84 yards on 20 attempts. Ellis finished with 142 yards passing with 13 out of 22 completed and 2 touchdown passes. Hunter Seier led the Cats in receiving yards with 102 yards on 5 receptions and 2 touchdowns. Julien Myers finished with 22 yards receiving on 2 catches and Ian Comer finished with 14 yards on 4 receptions.

The defense was led by Kaiden Abasolo who finished with 5.5 tackles (5 solo - 1 assist) and 3.0 sacks and 4.0 tackles for loss. Mason Ellis and Trent Moses both finished with 3.5 tackles (2-3 & 0-7). Keaton Herd finished with 3.0 tackles (1-4), and Ian Comer and Hunter Seier both finished with 2.5 tackles each (0-5 and 1-3). The Wildcats defense got their 5th safety of the season and also had 3 interceptions in the game by Comer, Ellis, and Seier.

Defense Cont: Trenton Davis 2.0 (1-2), Ethan Irvine 1.5 (0-3), Ethan Mandez 1.0 (1-0), Julien Myers 1.0 (1-0), Zach Lanzrath 1.0 (0-2), Chase Dieker 0.5 (0-1), Josh Phillips 0.5 (0-1).

The c-team traveled to Wellington on Monday and had quite the exciting game. The Wildcats came back from being down and tied up the game, forcing overtime and came home with the 30-28 win. The c-team finished their season at 3-6.

The Wildcats finished the regular season at 6-2 and 3-2 in league play, finishing in 3rd place in AVCTL D4 behind Andale and Collegiate and finishing 4th in the Class-4A West standings for the state bracket lineup.

The Cats will face Ulysses in the first game of 4A state at home on Friday, October 29th at 6:00 PM. Live stats for Friday's game can be found here.
