MHS - Wrestling / February 28, 2022 By Kasey McDowell

The Mulvane wrestling team qualified 5 wrestlers for the 4A state tournament and the Wildcats made the trip to Salina this past weekend. Senior Hunter Dietrich (138), senior Trent Moses (145), junior Andy Huynh (170), junior Ethan Irvine (182), and junior Chris Dietrich (195) all represented the Cats at the state tournament. The Wildcats as a team finished in 29th place out of 57 teams with 14 points.

Trent Moses made his third state appearance and was going for his second state medal. He won his first match by fall and his second match by decision. Moses lost his semifinal match by major decision which meant he had to battle for 3rd - 6th place through the consolation bracket. Trent lost his next match in a very close match that went into overtime, so his next match was for 5th/6th place. Moses battled hard in his final match and won by decision to secure a 5th place spot on the podium. Trent finished his high school career with 112 wins, 3 state appearences, 2 state medals, and will be continuing his wrestling career next year at Ottawa University.

Hunter Dietrich was the first up for Mulvane and unfortunately was battling a knee injury which greatly hampered his wrestling and he fell in his first 2 matches. Hunter had a great career at Mulvane and finished with over 90 wins and a 2-time state qualifier and a state medalist. Hunter will be continuing his wrestling career at Newman University next year.

Andy Huynh made his first trip to state this year and had a tough fist match, falling by decision which put him in the consolation bracket. Andy won his next match in a very exciting decision finish to advance, but fell in his 3rd match in another tough match that went into overtime. Andy finished his junior year with a 28-10 record and will look to a repeat trip to state next year.

Ethan Irvine made his first trip to state this year and had a tough fist match, losing by fall which put him in the consolation bracket. Ethan won his next match in a very exciting decision finish to advance, but fell in his 3rd match by decision in another tough match that went all 3 periods. Ethan finished his junior year with a 13-5 record and will look to a repeat trip to state next year.

Chris Dietrich made his second trip to state this year, an outstanding feat for him due to a tragic car accident at the beginning of the year, not knowing if we would even have a wrestling season. Chris had only 15 matches under his belt before the state tournament and his first round was a tough match against the number 1 seed, where he fell and went into the consolation bracket. Chris won his second match in a very exciting match which he won by a 7-2 decision. Chris fought hard in his last match but fell by decision. Chris finished his season with a 11-7 record and will be looking for a repeat trip to state next year.
