MHS - Men's Basketball / February 28, 2023 By Kasey McDowell
The Mulvane 8th grade boys basketball team wrapped up their 2022-23 season at the Patriot League tournament this past Saturday and Monday. The Cats defeated Winfield on Saturday and faced Rose Hill in the championship game on Monday. The Wildcats got off to a hot start against Rose Hill with a 17-5 first quarter and going up 37-13 at halftime. Not only were they on fire on the offensive side, but their defense was relentless, scoring many points in transition and from steals. The Cats were able to coast through the second half and won the championship game 56-40.
Hays Ensley had a terrific game and led the Wildcats with 27 points on the evening. Hudson Myers dropped in 12 points and Braylon Barnes dropped in 10 points in the game. Jacke Entwisle scored 5 points and Grady Myers finished with 2 points.
8A 1 2 3 4 Final
MMS 17 20 9 10 56
RMS 5 8 15 12 40
* Hays Ensley - 27 pts
* Hudson Myers - 12 pts
* Braylon Barnes - 10 pts
* Jack Entwisle - 5 pts
* Grady Myers - 2 pts
The 8A team finished their season with a perfect 15-0 record and also finished their MMS career with a 30-0 record including last year, a phenomenal feat, which I'm not sure has ever happened at Mulvane Middle School without doing some research. The team has several players that can score in double digits on any night, many times multiple players have scored in double digits, and defensively the team is as good as they come. The 8B team also had a phenomenal season with a 12-1 record and 10-1 in league play.
The 8A team finished the season with 786 points and their opponents scored 484 points. Hays Ensley led the team with 188 points and there were three other Cats who scored over 100 points. Hudson Myers finished with 144 points, Braylon Barnes finished with 136 points, and Jack Entwisle finished with 127 points. Barnes led the team in rebounds with 100 on the year and Ensley finished with 77 boards. Barnes also led the team in blocks with 29 and Ensley and Grady Myers led the team in steals with 33 and 26 respectively.
The 8B team finished the season with 446 points and their opponents scored 233 points. Breken Downs led the team with 105 points followed by Ethan Hankins with 75 and Colter Light with 57 points. Colter Light led the B team on the boards with 101 rebounds and Paxton Richardson led the team in steals with 25 on the year.
"This team will hold a special place in my heart," said Coach Keene Hargrove. "I am proud of these boys. They are the true meaning of a team and work well together. I am sad to see these boys go but excited to see what their future holds!"
