Some schedule changes forced the Mulvane Volleyball team to miss some early games but they were finally able to open the 2021 season at Clearwater last Tuesday, August 31st. The varsity and JV Cats faced the Indians in a best of 5 games. The JV team took Clearwater to 4 games but fell 1-3. The first game score was 9-25, the second game was 13-25, the third game was 25-23, and the fourth game was 19-25.
The varsity Cats struggled to get points on the board in the first game and fell 5-25. The second game found the Cats down 10-25 and the third game was closer at 18-25. The new Wildcats coach Matthew Schmidt is trying to work through some injuries and quarantines, so the Wildcats are looking to improve as the season progresses.
Karlie Kanaga (Jr.) led the Wildcats in hits with 11 completed out of 17 attempts on the evening. Legend Bell (Sr.), Jalin Lavers (Jr.), and Makenna Reekie (Sr.) all broke into double-digit hits with 10 each. Legend Bell led the Cats in kills with 6 on the evening and Lavers finished with 3 kills, Kanaga, Reekie, and Ashley Young (So.) all finished with 1 kill each.
Tatum Heersche (Sr.) led the team in digs with 10 and Lexi Schuckman (Sr.) finished with 9 digs followed by Kanaga (6), Lavers (5), Bell (2), Ashlyn Alumbaugh (So.) with 2, and Reekie, Young, and Addison Whisler (Sr.) all finished with 1 dig each.
The Wildcats will travel to Buhler tomorrow, Tuesday, September 7th for a triangular with Buhler and Augusta starting at 5:00 PM.
