Mulvane hosted their 43rd Wildcat Classic last week with 8 teams from around the area and 4 fun days of girls basketball. The Wildcats had their first game on Monday against Wichita Collegiate and the Wildcats took a 7-point lead into halftime up 17-12. Mulvane kept up the pressure all second half as well and finished with a 44-29 win. Junior Teagan Garrison had a great game with a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Madi Shaw also finished in double digits with 11 points.

The Wildcats next opponent was Conway Springs who had defeated Wichita North in their first game. The Wildcats and Cardinals were fairly evenly matched and Mulvane went into halftime down 20-22. The Cats made up some ground in the 3rd quarter, holding Conway to just 4 points. The Mulvane defense clamped down again in the 4th and the Wildcats got the 36-31 win. With their 2 wins, the Wildcats made it to the championship game for the first time since 2014 when the Cats won the tournament and had to face the last year's WCC champion the Wellington Crusaders. The Wildcats had been playing good defense all tournament and would need to bring that same energy to the championship game.

The Crusaders got off to an 11-6 lead in the first quarter, but the Cat's defense clamped down in the second quarter, holding them to just 8 points, and went into halftime down 12-19. The Cat defense was extra stingy in the third quarter as well, only allowing 7 points and keeping the game within reach. Mulvane gained some ground in the fourth quarter, getting within 4 points with 5 minutes left, but the Crusaders were able to pull away at the end and got the 39-23 win.

Teagan Garrison led the Cats with 11 points and Lauren Young finished with 8 points and 9 rebounds. Ashley Young had another good game on the boards with 8 rebounds. Madi Shaw did a great job keeping Wellington's offensive MVP to just 3 field goals. "I'm so proud of our girls and what they accomplished this week," said Coach Carpenter. "The girls are defending hard and doing the little things and most of all playing smart and disciplined. We held Wellington to the lowest points they've scored all year and we did the same against Clearwater, and they should be proud of that effort."
